Science 11/3/19

This week in science was Halloween and we had parent teacher conferences so we only had three days of school and we didn’t evan have science on Wednesday. On Tuesday and Wednesday we did a scavenger hunt instead of a quiz and that was really fun and some of the questions were confusing like when you had to unscramble the words to find that thing. We also made potions and Lucy Andre and I collected automolive berry and the leaves and cooked them in a pot with water. Then we poured that liquid the next day into one of the containers and the same amount of water into the other we haven’t gotten to see what the potion has done to the radishes yet but I’m exited to find out!

How big can a radish get?

How many colours of radishes are there?

How much light do radishes need?

10/20/19 Flower Dissection

This week in science we dissected flowers and plants, I liked the dissecting the flowers more because you could see all the parts inside. In one of the flower that I cut open there was nectar all over petals right by the pistol and in the snap dragon that I dissected you could see the egg sack way at the bottom it was really fun and interesting. When we Dissected the fruits and vegetables they weren’t as interesting because we cut those oped all the time and see the insides, but it was still very fun. We also went on a field trip on Thursday and learned about the process of wine making and his clean they have to be.

9/29/19 Western Prairie Fringed Orchid

Hi I’m a Western Prairie Fringed Orchid but people call me Orchid Prairie because one, I am an Orchid and two, I like to plant myself in “prairie potholes” which are indents left by glaciers from the ice age about 20,000 years ago. Of my kind there are only about 1,000 of us left. We are mainly threatened by global warming, development, and overgrazing. Yesterday I saw a big tractor and saw that it took out at least two other orchids, it came super close to me but it just grazed the ends of my petals. The sad thing is, that I had just released my sweet fragrance for the hawkmoths to gather my pollen. My sweet fragrance was washed away with the smell of diesel and  there were no other orchids around that I could see. With that being said I wasn’t sure how to reproduce. #habitatloss #notsurewhattodo

10/6/19 Cardinal Flower

Hi I am a Cardinal Flower, I am a native plant and most bugs do not collect my pollen because of the long tubes to get to it. We rely a lot on hummingbirds because they have very long beaks and can also transport pollen. We Cardinal Flowers like to grow in very wet and moist places like by the edge of a garden, that’s where I live, and today they got the mower out! I am just at the edge of a garden like I said before, but the mower started coming at me, but then at the last moment it swerved and carried on calmly. Another experience that I had was when I was first planted in a dry patch so I was dying and in that case they moved me next to the garden , and during that time when I was over there I got to see a lot of deer graze right beside me!  #closecall #native

Solar Power Cars 9/22/19

This last week we have been working on solar power cars. I am in a group with Michael and basically how the car works is the back wheels have a gear in the center of the axel and that is glued on to the car and then on the top the motor is glued right next to the gear and that has a small gear attached to that so that when the motor spins it spins the little gear which spins the wheels in the back them we have connected the solar panel to the motor and when the car gets sunlight the motor starts to spin. We also watched a video about grasshopper mice and they are super interesting when they are born their first instinct is to kill, and they are immune to scorpion venom and they use is as a pain killer. They are also immune to venomous centipede and with the centipede they don’t use their immunity they use their quick reflexes to dodge the centipedes stings.

All Year Round May/26/2019

This year science was very fun, we did a lot of experiments and we did amazing things. This week is our last blog. We did our constellations and it was awesome we started to study them and then we mapped them out in glow in the dark tape I’m doing Lynx and so far I’ve learned that the american indian tribes see theLynx as the keeper of secrets and a very mysterious. I think next week we are going to turn the dome inside out and then blow it up. This year we accomplished a lot. at the beginning of the year we learned about cycles and all that crazy stuff then we did our biomes then we had the trash unit which I did Toxic Algal Blooms with Harper. Then we did different things and then we did a bunch of experiments then we had kind of like a little fun time then we did glogsters and then mackinaw. Now we are doing constellations.Image result for happy

5/12/19 Glogster

This week so far we have presented our Glogsters (i will attach a link for that) and we buried a dead bird that Nikki thinks hit the window and we buried it in science because next year around this time we are going to go and dig up Heavens bones so that we can study them. Then we started to do research on our constellations. I chose Lynx we haven’t done much for that yet so I don’t know much about it. Also we have been talking about spring trip A LOT. I’m exited especially  fort he carriage ride to see the horses and i’m exited for everything else to. This Friday we had tech day so we played with dash and held chicks.

Science is awesome!!!

How did they come up with Lynx for this constellation?

Are we going to remember where heaven is?

Are we going to forget about Heaven?

Tornado Drill 5/5/19

Last week at school we did a simulation tornado drill. We got there at around 7:30 and the make up artists did our make up for the injury that we had. Then we went outside or inside I was outside with Shane, Josie, Lexi, Michael and David. Also we all had little signs hung around our neck to tell them what our fake blood pressure was and if we had vitals or not. The ambulance had to pretend that their was a fallen tree and a power line in the road, so they had to pretend to cut them. Once they came up they came over and checked my pulse and looked at my sign I was a black. So Josie was next to me and sense she was a red she could be saved, same with Michael. Lexi was a Grey and me and David were both blacks so then they helped the people that needed to be helped and pretended to take them to the emergency room but instead we all just sat in the ambulance.

Black=dead

Grey= not worth trying to save

Red=needs to be helped right away

Yellow=Needs to helped

Green=fine

How long does a tornado last?

How long do they take to form?

What does the temperature need to be?

Science fun! 4/21/19

This week science we did a few things, the first thing that we did was tend to the garden Harper and Caroline were in the hoop house and planted seed and the rest of us were in the garden next to the hoop house. We were ripping up weeds and planting some pee’s in the first raised bed. we also massaged the soil to find any roots that we missed.The next day we made signs for family fun night and then went down down to the playground. Wednesday  we worked on our fish with the second graders although my partner was not here so I did it by myself, we had a problem though we couldn’t find the video that we had made so far, so i had to start over. on Thursday we did an experiment, basically what happened was Shane gave us substances and we put boiled red cabbage in to find out what colour the PH was and we also used testing strips to find another answer. 7 is neutral 1 2 3 4 5 6 are acids  8 9 10 11 12 13 14 are bases then we recorded our data.Image result for base and acid ph

Glogster 5/14/19

Image result for titanium interesting factsThis week in science we worked on glogster which is basically a blog but also a poster, so what were doing is righting about the element that we chose. I chose Titanium, it’s atomic mass is 47,867 and its melting point is 1,668°C, boiling point is 3287°C. Did you know that titanium is found in every living thing. And a pure sample of titanium was not isolated until 1910 due to its ability to bond with other elements. It was discovered in 1791 by William Gregor. We also made potions out of different substances and wrote up a lab about it.
