How spice really works 3/22/2020

If you were ever wondering how your taste buds actually react to spices? Read this. Why does your mouth feel like its on fire when you eat as spicy pepper, well its on actually tasting the spice like you would taste salty sweet or sour. What’s really happening is that certain compounds in spicy foods activate the type of sensory neurons called poly modal  nociceptors and you have these all over your mouth and nose. And they are the same receptors that are activated by extreme heat. so when you eat a chili pepper you mouth feels like its burning when actually your brain just thinks its burning The opposite happens when you eat something with menthol in it, the cool minty compound is activating your cold receptors. When these heat sensitive receptors are activated your body thinks its in contact with a dangerous heat source and reacts accordingly. But you might have noticed that not all spicy foods are spicy in the same way, and the difference lies in the different compounds involved, the capsaicin and piperine found in black pepper and chili peppers are made up of larger heavier molecules called alkyamides and those mostly stay in your mouth. Mustard, horse radish, and wassibi those are made up of smaller molecules called icothiocyanates that easily float up to your sinuses. This is why chili peppers burn your mouth and wassibi burns your nose

Science 3/8/2020

This week in science we had parent teacher conferences, so we only had a 3 day week I am not really sure what to write about but we have a test on Wednesday and we have been going over that its about genetics and we also went down to the hoop house and talked about what needed to be fixed or how we could solve some of the problems in there. What I think we should do is put in a watering system on the top and get new soil and maybe put in a window.

What would we have to do to put in a window?

What plants are we planting?

Could we get new soil?

Science Expo 2/25/2020

This week there is a lot going there is the jump rope for heart routines and there is also the science expo I am doing an experiment where I’m watering plants with different liquids, they are coca cola, coffee, and carbonated water. Then seeing if they will grow or not. The data that I have gotten so far is that the coca cola has wilted the coffee has done the best and the carbonated water is kind of in between. I have used the same plant and have watering them the same amount. When ever I pick up the coke plant it is very heavy compared to the other ones. The coffe has been doing the best because of the time and how much I am watering them.

How many scientists have tried this experiment?

What is the best type of plant to do this with?

Next time should I plant them outside instead?

Genetics 2/4/20

This week so far we have been learning about genetics and we have started a slide show about genetics and my group is  doing animal cloning, and so far I have only heard of the the cons about it because there is  defection in the animals and they might not turn out well plus its not natural and its not good for the environment the only benefits that I have seen so far are for livestock breeders.  Because they can make money very fast and easy and they have good genes if they turn out well. We also started working on dragons that we are making and we flipped coins to figure out what tools we are using to make them we have only been doing them for one day but it is really fun.

How close are they to cloning humans?

Will cloning humans be a bad thing?

How will they test human cloning?

SCIENCE 2/2/20

This week in science were just introduced into a new unit (genetics) and we have also gotten introduced to what we are doing for the science expo. For genetics we are doing slide shows that are something that we chose to do in our group for example me and Caroline are doing animal cloning I have not gotten very far but the only pros that I have found from it are from livestock breeders otherwise i don’t think it is very good. For Thursday and Friday school got canceled. That is a little time taken away to work on our projects but thats ok.

How long are we doing genetics?

What is the most interesting fact that you know about genetics?

How Close are they to cloning humans?

Renaissance 1/12/20

These past few weeks have been kind of crazy because we had the renaissance unit and winter break. What we have been working on in science is we have been making solar systems and wanted posters on artists scientists poets. I did Francesco Petrarch I learned that he was one of the people who sparked the renaissance and he was known as the founder of humanism. He was a poet who wrote most of the greatest love poems in the renaissance.

how many people were alive during the renaissance?

what places did the renaissance take place in?

who actually started the renaissance?

Blue!!! 12/15/19

Butterflies are so many different colors because it is either to say i’m toxic or it is to tell if it is a male or a female. Did you know that flamingos are pink because of carotinoids from shrimp! Also Blue butterflies aren’t really blue the pigment on there wings is just light bounces of of there wings and makes it a blue. Same with blue jays and peacock feathers those blues aren’t actually a pigment the are just from the angle and the way you look at them. Did you know that trees can communicate through there roots called micro rhizome and they can communicate whether there is a heard of insects coming so the other tree could increase production of something to prepare themselves. They can also send glucose to a seedling that cant produce it as well.

What else can trees do that humans don’t know about?

How big can a tree grow in a year?

How many trees are on earth?

Bacteria 12/8/19

This week in science we did an experiment, what did is we got petrie dishes with agar in them and on the bottom it was separated into 4 quadrants and in a group we chose different things for every person in our group and when when you got home you would swab the thing that you chose and rub it gently onto the agar then we brought them bak to school and put them on the heater, and then the bacteria grows on the agar. We also watched some people present and worked on our slides.

Does all bacteria like heat?

How much bacteria is in the whole world?

How much bad bacteria is there?

11/24/19 Potomac Horse fever

This week we worked on our bacteria slides and posters, I got a lot done and I learned a lot about Potomac horse fever like they discoverer me but It was actually alive 5 years before that and vaccine that they made it was mixed with rabies and they haven’t abortion yet. And if you vaccinate in the spring then you vaccinate around this time then your horse has less of a chance of getting it.

How was PHF caused?

How many times can a more get PHF?

Can abortion be prevented (at all)?

Science Fun 11/10/19

This week in science we worked on finishing up our flower unit, we finished our slides and scavenger hunt. Then we started our bacteria unit and watched some videos about it and talked about it. We had some homework about it and that was fun. Then we started our projects. I am doing PHF which stands for Potomac Horse Fever its a virus that can happen to horses of all ages and it mostly happens by the water because of the bugs that are over there but it can also happen in tall grass and other places.

What breeds can get PHF?

H0w many horses have gotten PHF?

What bugs carry PHF?
